Summer Reading Challenge

Book your place online for the first session, visit your local library each week through the summer holidays and have fun!

Space Chase

Prepare to blast off with Space Chase! The 2019 Summer Reading Challenge, inspired by the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing. Make your way to your nearest Planet Library each week to receive your mission commands and discover a fantastic selection of out-of-this-world books.

Children taking part in The Challenge will read six books over the course of the holidays, and help our super space family, The Rockets, as they track down books nabbed by mischievous aliens! Read every week this summer and get special rewards.

Taking part in the Challenge

The Summer Reading Challenge is FREE, but is very popular. All space cadets must book their place in advance. Not a member yet? East Riding Libraries is free to join for everyone. Under 16s can get a junior membership by visiting any library or mobile library and will need a consent form signed by a parent or guardian. Find your nearest library.

The Summer Reading Challenge encourages children aged 4 to 11 to read six library books during the long summer holiday and is organised by The Reading Agency, supported by Arts Council England.

What's on Book your place for this year's Summer Reading Challenge

Booking your place
Places must be booked for each child attending before the first session in the week commencing Monday 22 July. You will need your child's library card number to book your place. Accompanying adults do not need to book. Not a member? Membership is free, all that's needed is the ID and signature from a responsible parent or carer. Visit your nearest library to join.

You can search for sessions at your local library on the What's On page. Once the challenge starts, and you do not have a booked place but want to take part, there may be spaces available. Please ask at your local library.
Session times

Space Chase sessions will take place on the same day and time each week. To help as many children take part as possible, East Riding Libraries will be running multiple sessions each week for some libraries. However, due to space and resources, you can only attend the session time and library you originally booked.

Space Chase, Summer Reading Challenge 2019 runs between Monday 22 July to Saturday 7 September. Please note, all libraries are closed on Monday 26 August for the Bank Holiday, speak to the Library staff in your local branch for alternative arrangements if one of your sessions falls on this date.
